Stephen has been working in the film and video industry for the past twenty years. As a producer, he has worked on an array of projects ranging from corporate, commercial, documentaries and feature film work. His technical skills entail an expert understanding of the use of most modern high-end production tools including cranes, jibs, dollies, steadicam, and an assortment of helicopter and vehicle mounts.
Additionally, he has worked with virtually all high definition video and film formats and has a strong understanding of post-production requirements as related to field production.
Stephen has in-depth experience as a cinematographer working on historical based projects involving pyrotechnics, weapons, and special makeup effects.
In 1989, Stephen began work as one of the founders of Circuit City's Media Design and Development Department. CCMDD provided in-house resources for the design, production and implementation of internal communication and training materials. During his time with the department he worked in the capacity of producer, director and cameraman. In addition to production, Stephen served over an eighteen month period, as project manager over the design and construction of CCMDD's new production facility located at the Mayland Drive office in Richmond. Areas of involvement included oversight of design and construction of the facilities two edit suites, production studio, VO booth, green room, prop shop, HVAC, electrical distribution and acoustic isolation and treatments.
In 1995 Stephen began a concentrated immersion in cinematography for film-based commercials, corporate image and narrative work while working with BES Television as staff Director of Photography and Studio Manager.
In 1997 Stephen started Stephen M Lyons Director of Photography for the pursuit of regional and national commercials, corporate image and narrative film and video production. He has since then photographed four feature film projects, dozens of regional and national commercials as well as working with corporate clients as diverse as Exxon, Hogan Golf, the Kennedy Center, United Way, USO, and Yorktel.
In addition to operating as a producer and director of photography, Stephen owns and operates LyonsDP, a provider of lighting, grip and camera packages as well as crew coordination.
